Calvin (10) at Taylor (9)
Our first tournament was at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. Two teams (Oakland and Cincinnati) backed out at the last minute, but because we hadn't played on a field yet this season, our team opted to make the trip for a single game. Our host was gracious enough to scrimmage 15 minutes beforehand, so we could introduce the game to several players who had never played before. Also, because of several injuries, we fielded the 12 needed, but did not have the luxury of a single sub.
The actual game itself was a great one for our two supporting fans. (Thanks, Homans, for driving the distance!) Our three new players (Alina, Jodi & Sarah) picked up the game remarkably fast and did a fantastic job being thrown in without watching it from the sidelines first. Our new goalie this year, Val, had a phenomenal first game of the season with eleven saves. Our center, Alyssa, was not deterred by small matters of losing a skirt mid-game, and expertly controlled the draw each time in addition to scoring twice. Dani had two assists and two goals, both of which occured during the final minute of the game, allowing us to tie the score and head into overtime. Liz, the high scorer of the game, walked away with five goals. Hanna, our steady attack wing, had an assist as well as a goal. Katie Roeda and Whitney kept our midfield connections alive, while Ana and Andrea (who ended impressively in the splits) controlled the defense.
We ended up tied 8-8 before heading into overtime, where we won 10-9. Fabulous job, girls! Looking forward to our game on Wednesday. What a great way to start the season!
(And thanks so much to Angela R. for taking the stats as her stress fracture heals.)
